چکیده

The absolute motion of the South Bismarck Plate was first estimated by Tregoning et al. [1998] from three site velocities estimated from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations. We report an improved estimate of the Euler vector for this plate using site velocities derived from new GPS data which include the velocity of a site located∼25 km from the pole of rotation. The GPS velocities of Madang, Witu, Jacquinot Bay and Finschafen can be modelled to within ∼3 mm/yr using a single pole of rotation located at 6.75S, 147.98E with a clockwise rotation rate of 8.11/My. The known tectonic features and available geophysical data surrounding the South Bismarck Plate can also be explained by a rotation of the South Bismarck Plate about this pole.

Plate kinematics in the western Pacific derived from geodetic observations

[1] Plate kinematics have been derived from GPS site velocities spanning Australasia and the western Pacific and define a framework in which deformation fields at plate boundaries can be investigated. The Australian Plate appears to be rigid from Cocos Island in the west to Noumea in the east and incorporating all of the Australian continent. A revision of the angular velocity vector of the Pac...

Global Health Diplomacy, National Integration, and Regional Development through the Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS Programs in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Samoa

The South Pacific countries of Vanuatu, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea have ascended rapidly up the development spectrum in recent years, refining an independent and post-colonial economic and political identity that enhances their recognition on the world stage. All three countries have overcome economic, political and public health challenges in order to stake their claim to sovereignty. In this...

Tectonic interpretation of aftershock relocations in eastern Papua New Guinea using teleseismic data and the arrival pattern method

S U M M A R Y The arrival pattern (AP) method and teleseismic data have been used to relocate aftershocks following three major (M w >= 7.8) interplate earthquakes that occurred in eastern Papua New Guinea in 2000 November. The first event was an M w = 8.0 strike-slip earthquake that ruptured the Weitin fault over a length of ∼100 km. No aftershocks were located in the upper 15 km, suggesting t...

Lyrodus turnerae, a new teredinid from eastern Australia and the Coral Sea (Bivalvia: Teredinidae)

Lyrodus turnerae n. sp., a species of Teredinidae, is described from specimens in tropical Australia and Papua New Guinea. The new species is characterized by the morphology of the pallets, with a dark periostracal cap sharply descending into a thin calcium cup. New and existing collection records of L. turnerae are presented, indicating a distribution range from coastal Papua New Guinea and th...
